Koerner Hall, in The Royal Conservatory of Music’s TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning, has been named Best Concert Hall in NOW magazine’s 2017 “Best of Toronto” Reader’s Choice Awards.
Koerner Hall is a 1,135 seat venue designed in the tradition of the classic "shoebox" venues of Europe, built without compromise and with a mission to provide acoustic perfection for music of all genres.
Classical, jazz, pop, opera, and world music are right at home in Koerner Hall. Its high ceiling and first-rate projection and communication technology make it perfect for films, lectures, and educational or corporate conferences. With its layered ribbon of wood forming a floating ceiling canopy, integrating an acoustic reflector, performance lighting, and technical bridges, Koerner Hall provides a dramatic yet intimate ambience between the audience and performers. The spectacular glass lobbies welcome guests to Koerner Hall and offer an extraordinary view of the city.
Since opening on September 25, 2009, Koerner Hall has become beloved by local concertgoers for its breathtaking beauty and acoustic excellence. More than one million people have attended close to 2,000 concerts and events in the venue. Koerner Hall has established itself as a cultural hub in Toronto and has a growing international reputation as one of the best concert halls in the world.
The hall has also become the venue of choice for many internationally celebrated performers. Lang Lang has described it as “the best acoustic hall in the world,” while Grammy Award-winning jazz artist Dianne Reeves has lauded its “extraordinary” sound. Iconic actress Meryl Streep described her experience in the hall as “the warmest embrace of any room I’ve been in” while Bill Murray praised it as an “incredible venue.”
“The Best Concert Hall win in NOW magazine validates our position as a venue for all of Toronto,” said Mervon Mehta, Executive Director of Performing Arts. “It’s also a validation of the diverse concerts and events that take place in Koerner Hall, presented by a myriad of arts and literary groups.”
The first concerts of Koerner Hall’s 10th anniversary season will be announced in January 2018.
